Maintenance Basics (street)
motorcycle MAINTENANCE basics (see owners manual for model specifics) MAINTAINING your motorcycle is critical to its safe operation, here are some often overlooked items.Tire pressure, and condition should be checked twice weekly when riding daily. before a ride if the bike has been parked for an extended period of time (2 week/more). what pressure you set is based on conditions, and rider ability (pace). tires have an APPROXIMATE life of 5 years check the date code on the sidewall. chain MAINTENANCE should be performed every 300-500 miles, or after riding in the rain/washing the bike. cleaning the chain can be ACCOMPLISHED with a VARIETY of over the counter cleaners. DISH SOAP in warm water and a old toothbrush makes an inexpensive alternative for cleaning the chain and SURROUNDING components. ( belt and or shaft drive bikes refer to your owners manual). brake fluid, pads, calipers and lines all require MAINTENANCE. brake fluid should be replaced annually (in mild climates)brake hoses should be replaced every 3 to 5 years (we RECOMMEND upgrading to steel braided lines). braided lines do not need to be replaced unless damaged. when REPLACING brake pads take the time to clean the caliper and PISTONS (helps MAINTAIN smooth operation) clean with dish soap and warm water. clean old brake material off rotors (bead blasting recommended). spin the wheel do the brakes drag SIGNIFICANTLY? if yes it's time to clean the calipers, pistons and rotors. dragging brakes can get hot and begin to fade under heavy braking.suspension is often overlooked. the suspension fluid breaks down overtime and use. as the fluid becomes thinner your motorcycles handling CHARACTERISTICS will change. replacing the fork oil APPROXIMATELY EVERY 4k-7k miles. similarly the rear shock also needs MAINTENANCE. a vast MAJORITY of rear shocks are NON SERVICEABLE, these need to be replace. it is strongly recommended to have your suspension setup done by a professional such as dave moss, in person or REMOTELY (we can assist). engine oil and filter. todays oils and filters still have a life and require MAINTENANCE. changing the oil and filter should be performed between 3k-7k depending on manufacturer. (Check your owners manual for specific intervals) always use a quality name brand oil, that meets the specifications set out in your manual. most modern street bikes require ma2 for emissions purposes. it is a good idea to check nuts and bolts annually to verify they have not loosened.
