Eyes MUST look up and ahead to see through the turn. How many experienced riders have spoken about this and how many of you have yet to hear that term? Do you actively apply it at every corner while riding? Are your eyes fixed on one focal point or constantly moving to scan and complete the picture for you? most riders have heard be smooth. Do they understand what that means or how to achieve this? being focused and present allows the time to be smooth. Here we will discuss the operation of the motorcycle controls, front brake, rear brake, and ENGINE braking. Engine braking, this is a non adjustable brake (during application) you can not add more brake unless you perform a backshift (downshift). Do not rely on this SOLELY to slow you! Rear brake, this brake is amazing at helping to STABILIZE the bike during slow speed MANEUVERS. riders can APPLY light pressure to the rear brake pedal ( dragging the brake). this brake while adjustable only holds APPROXIMATELY 30% of the bikes stopping power. abs helps prevent a skid (loss of traction).front brake this is the most powerful brake, your motorcycle has to offer. being smooth with this controls operation is critical in the riders ability to maintain stability THROUGHOUT a slowing or stopping situation. Use the brakes do not rely solely on the non adjustable (while actively slowing) engine to slow you. Use a combination of brakes and downshifts when time permits, based on distance to your decision point. riders should stay with the brakes until they are happy with speed and direction.how do we become smooth? it begins with the LANGUAGE we use to describe the actions PERFORMED while riding. we apply the brakes, we squeeze the brakes. using terms that mean smooth actions allows our brains to come to terms with the new concept. once we have CHANGED our mindset we now need to practice. simple drills will elevate your braking ability. (more drills in person). PRACTICE with intent, ride with intent and purpose. what that purpose is, is up to each rider to DISCOVER for themselves. click the link to download or PRINT braking drills Rider hit debris in P2 bike momentarily lost traction. Engine braking was not enough to stop the bike. Forks do not compress indicating the brakes were not applied.
What could be changed? Use P1 at turn in and be patient, wait for the exit. Use the brakes over just the engine, in this video the rider needed more than the engine had to offer in the selected gear.
Using a combination of Brakes, Transmission Backshifts (downshifts) and Engine, leaves the rider in control of slowing. Remember, Riders stay with the brakes until we are happy with speed and direction.
Rider in P1 making a left corner the rider should be in P3 coming from outside to inside. The rider doesn't actively slow before going wide and off the pavement. Using correct lane position along with good use of our eyes we can prevent these incidents.
